About the Course

Thanks to a growing number of software programs, it seems as if anyone can make a webpage. But what if you actually want to understand how the page was created? There are great textbooks and online resources for learning web design, but most of those resources require some background knowledge. This course is designed to help the novice who wants to gain confidence and knowledge. We will explore the theory (what actually happens when you click on a link on a webpage?), the practical (what do I need to know to make my own page?), and the overlooked (I have the code, but how do I put it on the web to share with others?). Throughout the course there will be a strong emphasis on adhering to syntactic standards for validation and semantic standards to promote wide accessibility for users with disabilities. This course will appeal to a wide variety of people, but specifically those who would like a step-by-step description of the basics. There are no prerequisites for this course and it is assumed that students have no prior programming skills or IT experience. The course will culminate in a small final project that will require the completion of a very simple page with links and images. The focus of this course is on the basics, not appearance. You can see a sample final HTML page at https://example-site-1--wd4ehtml.repl.co/ . This is the first course in the Web Design For Everybody specialization. Subsequent courses focus on the marketable skills of styling the page with CSS3, adding interactivity with JavaScript and enhancing the styling with responsive design....

It's really good for beginners! I didn't believe that at the beginning, because i was really new and it was hard for me to understand some things at first time. But if you don't give up, you will succeed! Lectures are simple and easy for understanding. I strongly recommend this course.

Even though I would have liked something more hands-on (this subject matter doesn't come naturally to me), I was able to complete the course and obtain a certificate. I appreciate all the efforts that went into this online course and recommend it to other computer programming newbies.

The instructor, Colleen van Lent, is a fantastic teacher, who not helps to clarify concepts from basic level, but also suggests extremely good sources to learn HTML5. The course is also very thoughtfully designed, so that people with different motives to learn HTML5 can also benefit.

i already had a small idea about HTML so this course really was easier to understand. i think for someone with zero experience, this course will be a best place to start. the course was effective and if you work the way the instructor advises you, you can really improve your skills.

I am an experienced developer but even with 4 years or so of solid HTML writing, this class taught many important lessons in accessibility which I had not known about or had forgotten. Some useful know hows that I needed a refresher on and some new best practices. Thank you Colleen

I love that this class is taught with a focus on Accessibility and also that it is taught in a way that makes a learner feel comfortable making mistakes and learning from them. I learned a lot, right up through through the final quiz. And I knew nothing about HTML at the beginning.

This is the first course I get to complete at Coursera and I was amazed about how well explained everything was and how I got hooked into it. The teacher is great and made everything clear since the beginning . I'm looking forward on continuing with the rest of the specialization.

This is one of the best short courses out there. You can learn the basics of HTML5 with this course in a very short time and you really don't need to know anything before you start this course. This is definitely the best course to start the journey in the world of web development.

This is really a great course at it actually covers a lot of basic things that are rarely covered in courses other than this. Also I really understood the need of web accessibility and what is semantic code design which is very much needed for designing good and accessible pages.

Thank you for the course. It was really good and I enjoyed it. Especially seeing that nothing is perfect the first time. I am looking forward to doing the next course. I was missing one thing - an editor to use on ipad as I do not have anything else. I ended up using Textastic.

Thank you so much for this course! Thank you 'University of Michigan' for making education affordable for many.

I loved it! It was fun & easy to learn HTML! I'll continue next week, I'm taking also the UX/UI specialization from CALARTS. So one week I code & the other I design.

This course was very informative and approachable. I know there's a lot of time spent on "double checking code" but it might help to have a "practice quiz" before the final quiz that deals solely with double checking the slightly more complex code that the final exam features.

Excellent instructor! The presentation was clear. The pace of the work was good. I like the way she wasn't afraid to make mistakes, and encouraged students to continually try and explore. That is the nature, and the spirit, of of the internet, and computer science in general!

As an experienced back-end programmer I still enjoyed this course and got out of it what I needed. Although really aimed at beginners, it does still provide the necessary content and more (such as a focus on accessibility). Colleen is very easy to listen to and explains well.
